Recreational Opportunity Spectrum Analysis

The following tables show what percentage of lands are within specified distances from motorized roads and trails. We give figures for four distances:

Less than 0.5 miles from a road - Areas dominated by motor vehicle use.
Less than 1 mile from a road - Noise from dirt bikes, ATVs, etc. clearly noticeable.
Greater than 2 miles from a road - Areas little impacted by ORV use.
Greater than 3 miles from a road - Primitive areas, far from roads.

As can be seen from the tables below, the current county "spaghetti maps" offer an extremely unbalanced recreational opportunity spectrum, biased heavily in favor of motorized recreation; the overwhelming majority of the areas are within 1 mile of a road. In contrast, the Redrock Heritage proposed transportation plan offers a more balanced spectrum of recreational opportunities: there exist ample opportunities for both motorized and non-motorized recreation. Interestingly, even the Redrock Heritage plan would put a majority of the land (in many areas a large majority of the land) within 1 mile of a road.
